Alcala Pet Care History
Like many small businesses, Alcala Pet Care started with a passion and grew by word of mouth. Dr. Lockwood's success with
breeding and showing Miniature Poodles and Bichon Frise has sent him around the world, competing in dog shows and exchanging
information on the best pet care techniques.
In 1975, Dr. Lockwood left his successful career at UCSD to start a small show dog kennel in Cardiff by the Sea. This small kennel began drawing its loyal customers when word spread about his attention to personal contact, cleanliness, and demand for dogs to go home cleaner, healthier, and happier than they came in. This small shop has grown one stage at a time, always with a goal to create the healthiest, happiest environment for pets away from their home.
American Boarding Kennel Association, American Kennel Club, San Diego Bichon and Poodle Clubs, and more
Dr. Lockwood was a charter member of the American Boarding Kennels Association, San Diego Bichon Club, and has consistently supported many animal welfare groups, including: Pets Are Wonderful Support, Friends of County Animal Shelters, Cat Rescue Society, Companion Pet Rescue, and more.
35 Years of Innovation
The boarding industry was surprised by the introduction of the Kitty Ritz Hotel in 1985. It was the first cattery to be
built specifically for cats and separate of the dog kennel. Dr. Lockwood was the first to introduce air-conditioning,
luxury boarding suites, and many other comfort and health standards.
Alcala introduced the play yard in 1990. This former orchard was converted to a large, fenced grass yard for the dogs to play.
Alcala's elegant early-American architecture sits comfortably on its hill top location. Cool ocean breezes keep the area fresh and comfortable. Come to Alcala and your dog pets will thank you for it.
