How To Trim A Yorkie’s Face – An Ultimate Guide

Taking care of a Yorkshire breed is not an easy task, especially when you own a small dog. The smaller the dog, the more you have to take care of it And, of course, a rarely-trimmed Yorkie would be unhappy.

No need to spend money on pet services at the spa,  now you can trim your dog’s face yourself! Yes, that’s it! With some tools in your own house and a little work, your Yorkie will have its cute face available for everyone to see.

Here’s a full guide on how to trim a Yorkie’s face.

Step 1: Get your Yorkie relaxed

First thing first, attitude is one of the key factors in trimming your Yorkie’s face precisely. You need to make sure that your dog is in the best mood for the trimming session. Take him out for a walk, or play fetch with him. Every dog loves to fetch.

Your Yorkie needs to obey your commands for the trimming job to be easier. If you have been raising him since he was little, then making him listen to you should be easier. But in the case that your Yorkie is naughty, you can’t force cutting his hair because you might risk hurting your lovely pet.

Step 2: Place your Yorkie on a flat surface at waist level

The job will be less of a struggle if the dog is at your waist or chest level. Remember that the surface mustn’t be slippery, or else your dog will slip and might get hurt.

In case you can’t find a non-slippery surface, you can put a bath mat under your Yorkie. This is an easy-to-clean item so you don’t need to worry about having to throw a good bath mat away.

Step 3: Comb the fur on its face

Once everything is prepared and settled, start combing out the fur on your Yorkie’s face. Hold your dog’s head and brush. You can start from the top of the head and then down to the neck. Make sure there are no balls of fur left before you trim.

Note: If your Yorkie’s got long fur, you should put it up in a ponytail to avoid inconvenience while trimming.

Step 4: Trim around the eyes, ears, and chin

For this step, you will need clippers: with a 10 blade and a 40 blade.

With the 40 blades, shave the inner part of the tip of the ear. And with the 10 blades, shave the outer part of the tip of the ear.

Then, clean the corner of the eye with 40 blades (remember to clean the corner only and no more)

The next step is to comb forward to trim bangs. For trimming bangs, there’s a special tool called curved scissors. Like trimming your bangs, cut your Yorkie’s hair in a straight line above its eyes.

For this part, you will need scissors. Start from the bottom ear down. Don’t forget to follow the line of fur on your Yorkie’s face to its chin.

Step 5: Get rid of excess fur

Comb the hair from one side of the cheeks to the top of the head. Then you grab the hair with your fingers and cut the excess hair as needed. One thing you need to remember is that you must always cut a proportional amount to the length of the body.

Next, use the nose as a center guide to go around the beard. This must also be proportional to the top of the head.

Note: Do not cut the hair on the cheeks. Leave them long to blend with the face and ears.

With your straight scissors, cut the hair sticking out of the tips of the ears. Next, you fold the ears and cut the uneven hairs. Lastly, use your blending shears to soften or blend the area.
